Cost of Chimney Inspection

Chimney Inspection Cost

The cost of chimney inspection will increase or decrease based upon a number of factors. This article is intended to provide you with a checklist of questions to ask yourself and your contractor.

This key will serve as your guide:

$0 = No additional cost
$ = Standard cost
$$ = Additional cost

What type of chimney needs to be inspected?

$ - When a standard, brick chimney is inspected.

$$ - When a wood burning or pellet stove is inspected.

$$ - When a freestanding chimney is inspected.

What size chimney do I have?

$ - For a standard-sized chimney.

$$ - For an exceptionally large or very tall chimney.

What type of inspection do I need?

$ - For a Level 1 Inspection.

This is the most basic, standard visual inspection. The inspector will check for any obstructions and he will make sure that the flue is functioning properly. In some cases, a Level 1 inspection will include a basic sweeping.

$$ - For a Level 2 Inspection.

In addition to Level 1 inspection, the inspector will take a deeper look at the structural integrity of the chimney. The inspector will inspect the interior and the exterior of the chimney, and he may also access the roof. It may or may not include a video inspection. A Level 2 inspection is typically required before purchasing a home and/or after a natural disaster.

$$$ - For a Level 3 Inspection.

A Level 3 inspection is required after your chimney has suffered significant damage. For example, a Level 3 inspection may be needed after a major earthquake or house fire. The inspector will most likely need to destroy part of the chimney to access the concealed and hard to reach areas. A Level 3 inspection may result in the total reconstruction of the chimney.

Is the roof easily accessible?

$ - When the roof is easily accessible with a ladder.

$$ - When the roof is difficult to reach. (This may require additional safety measures and special equipment.)

Are any minor repairs required?

$0 – When the chimney is inspected and no repairs are performed.

$$ - When the inspector performs minor repair work on the chimney.
