Repairing a Chimney
Here is a list of some of the most common chimney repairs.
1. Mortar Crown Repair
The crown of the chimney is the cement surface at the very top of the chimney. If the mortar crown cracks, rain and snow can seep into the chimney. If too much moisture is allowed to accumulate in the chimney, mold and mildew may begin to grow.
2. Firebox Repair
The firebox is typically referred to as the fireplace. It is the wall directly inside of the chimney’s opening that helps guide smoke toward the flue. The firebox receives the most exposure to extreme temperatures. If the firebox becomes damaged, the smoke may not be able to properly exit the home. 3. Re-line the Flue
The flue is the internal pipe that vents the chimney to the exterior and protects the chimney from heat damage and corrosion. Flue liners are typically made of clay, ceramic, or metal. If the flue liner breaks or cracks, smoke cannot properly exit the home. If soot and sparks become trapped in the chimney, they can cause serious damage.
4. Cleaning
If your chimney is not venting properly, you may need to have your chimney swept or cleaned. Debris, like twigs and leaves, can clog the chimney and prevent smoke from reaching the outside. Creosote deposits and soot are flammable and if they are not removed periodically, they can cause a dangerous fire in your chimney.

5. Chimney Cap Replacement
If the cap (or top) of your chimney breaks, leaves, twigs, and animals can enter your chimney. You should replace the chimney cap so that debris and excess moisture from precipitation cannot enter the home.

6. Total Rebuild
After a house fire, you will likely need a Level III inspection. This type of inspection typically involves the partial demolition of the chimney to fully uncover all of internal damage. Following the inspection, you will need to hire a chimney contract to completely rebuild the internal and external structure of the chimney.
