Types of Chimney Inspections
By ProMatcher Staff
What kind of chimney inspection do I need?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets national standards for chimney inspections. There are currently three levels of inspections are available. As the number of the inspection increases (1-3), so does the cost and the comprehensiveness of the inspection.
Level 1 Inspection Cost: Most Affordable
A Level I inspection is the most basic visual inspection of your chimney. The inspector will remove any obstructions and clear away excessive build-up. Generally speaking, the inspector will make sure all accessible parts of the chimney are working properly and ensure that the chimney is safe to use. Sometimes, an inspection is included in the cost of chimney sweeping or cleaning. No special equipment is required for this type of inspection.

Level 2 Inspection Cost: Somewhat Expensive
A Level II inspection will always include a Level I inspection. In addition to these preliminary measures, the inspector will take a closer look at the interior and the exterior of the chimney to ensure that it is structurally sound. Many of these inspections include a video scan. The inspector will use a camera to see the parts of the chimney that are inaccessible or hard to reach. A Level II inspection is usually required when you are purchasing a new home. It may also be needed after a severe storm or natural disaster.
Level 3 Inspection Cost: Expensive
A Level III inspection is the most invasive inspection. This inspection often requires the demolition of at least a part of the chimney’s structure in order to inspect portions that are not typically visible or accessible. A Level 3 inspection is generally performed after a high-magnitude earthquake or destructive house fire. These inspections can cost thousands of dollars, depending on the size and the extent of the damage.
